A group of influential and civic-minded women . . .
In the early fifties, Maestro Ezra Rachlin suggested to a group of influential and civic-minded women to consider the formation of an organization whose purpose would be to support the Austin Symphony. His dream of fostering an appreciation for fine music came true with the formation of the Women’s Symphony League of Austin on June 18, 1953. The Women’s Symphony League (WSL), a non-profit organization, financially supports the Austin Symphony and provides many music education programs for the youth of Austin.
The very first Symphony Ball, “A Night in Old Vienna”, was held over a half century ago. The evening featured The Austin Symphony and dancing to grand Strauss waltzes. That original dream has evolved to become the brilliant Jewel Ball events that are recognized around the state and nationally today.
The Jewel Ball has three events, each fun and different.
The first event of the season is the SOIRÉE DANSANTE. Soiree Dansante is to honor the 10th grade Belles and Beaux of WSL members. This is a black tie event for 9th and 10th graders usually held the Sunday night of Labor Day weekend. This event is held in honor of the 10th grade children of WSL members.
The next event is the FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON which is a fabulous fusion of fashion and fun. Well-known for stunning presentations, the Fashion Show is always professionally produced. We are delighted to present a fashion show that could rival any in Paris!
The final event is the Jewel Ball itself. THE JEWEL BALL commences with an elegant presentation of the Royal Court, continues with a bounteous feast and concludes with dancing the night away. An AUCTION to appeal to all tastes is a highlight of the evening!
All proceeds go to the Austin Symphony Orchestra and our music educational programs for Austin’s youth.
